SEO For Small Businesses - 3 Quick Concepts To Help Business Owners Get Started And Land On Page 1

Every business no matter their size should have a website. However, SEO for small businesses can be a challenge due to time and sometimes the high costs involved. In all cases, knowing at least your options and casting a wider net over the ways to market your online business is going to be key here. You need to know what SEO is of course which stands for 'Search Engine Optimization' and is the concept to organically drive traffic from prospects/customers typing in good keywords and finding keyword phrases that lands your website on the first page of Google (and other search engine sites).
SEO For Small Businesses - The 3 Concepts:

Know what a good keyword phrase is - Finding keyword phrases that you believe your prospectors are using to find a service or product is the most important strategy here. There are many free SEO tools around (just search Google!) that will provide statistics to help evaluate and determine which keywords are relevant and strong to drive traffic to your website.

Knowing something about the Google engine - Without being too technical, you need to understand that Google doesn't just look at your domain or website name and says I will rank you with all the other sites out there. There are other factors it uses; using a very complex algorithm (and changes quite often). Each page on your website is treated independently and Google will rank the page itself meaning you choose one keyword phrase per page and therefore can target different visitors to different pages. Using SEO for small businesses will be a real benefit here as they can split test and have different marketing campaigns at a very low cost if not free.

Competition is healthy - You need some competition right? Yes, because this is how you measure what's popular and in demand. But in order to land on the first page (of ten results per page), you need to knock one competitor off the first page and finding good keyword phrases is going to be the trick. There are many factors to help you along and include looking at the competition SEO keywords and keyword phrases they use, what other links can be found to the pages (backlinks) and what's the age of the domain as older domains are likely to be given extra credit when Google looks for ranking a page too.
This is only the start but many business owners should spend some time understanding a little about how online marketing and SEO works before engaging the services of a professional should they have the budget to do so.

Another Tip for you! The importance of having backlinks to your website is going to sit well with Google and credit you more so than competitor's who do not have any. It tells Google that you are an authority and known to other related domains adding extra credibility. Forums and internet groups are good place to start!
